Mwamedi Chiwaya

Born in 1979 in Dar es Salaam, Mwamedi Chiwaya is from the Ngoni tribe from Songea.

He started painting when he was 12, learning from his father, Mzee Rajabu Chiwaya.

He now lives in Mbagala with his family and enjoys painting different animals and village activities.

Sufiani Issa Athumani

Sufiani Athumani was born in 1983 in Dar es salaam, and is part of the Zigua tribe.

He started painting in 1999 under the guidance of Mr Akili Mali, and has exhibited in Switzerland, Italy, Arusha and Zanzibar.

His paintings focus on wildlife and village activities.

Aminata Rashidi

Aminata was born in 1984 to a Makonde mother and a Makua father in Dar es Salaam.

Mwamedi Chiwaya introduced Aminata to Tingatinga painting.  Aminata´s father, Rashidi Mlaponi, was also a painter.

Aminata lives in Msasani with her husband Mussa and two children - Adija and Rashidi.

Saidi Adamu

Saidi Adamu was born in Tunduru in South Tanzania in 1979 to a Makua mother and a Mwao father.

He set off for Dar es Salaam at the age of 20 to learn Tingatinga art under the guidance of Saidi Chilamboni and his son Saidi Omary.

Saidi is a great painter with his works mastering intricate details.

He now lives in Mikocheni with his wife and his 6 year old son Adam.

Omary Amonde

Omary Amonde (sometimes signing as Ojaja) has been painting for almost 40 years, and is the only living student of Edward Tingatinga (other students were Adeus Mandu, Januari Linda, Ajaba Abdallah, Caspar Hendrick Tedo and George Mpata).

Omary was born Nakapanya in 1940. He is the brother of Abdul Mkura and Nakoko Saidi.

He has visited France twice and China once in support of his exhibitions.

Nakoko Saidi

Nakoko Saidi was born in Mindu in 1952. He is the older brother of Abdul Mkura (who was also Nakoko's teacher) and younger brother of Omary Amonde

He and his brothers went to Dar es Salaam to work for a cinema - however, when the cinema went out of business, Nakoko decided tried his luck as a painter.

His special Tingatinga designs are blue hippos and the flamingos painted with a thick colour, a style that is proving to be very popular.

He lives with his wife and children in Msasani.

Iddi Issa

Iddi comes from the family of Hashim Bushiri Mruta, a well known and recognized Tingatinga painter who passed away 1999.

Iddi lived in Mchuruka Village in the Tunduru district and came to Dar es Salaam to look for work. He was introduced to Tingatinga by Rajabu Chiwaya, the father of Mwamedi Chiwaya.

Iddi is the founder of the Tingatinga Cooperative in Dar es Salaam and he has also succeeded in raising funds in Switzerland for the construction of the Tingatinga Studio building.

Iddi now lives in Kinondoni with his wife and a newborn child Munira. He enjoys riding his bicycle, particularly to travel to and from the Cooperative.

Zabury Chimwanda

Zabury Chimwanda was born in Nakapanya in 1947 and has been painting for more than 40 years. He was originally taught by Omary Amonde.

Zabury was one of the founders of the Tingatinga Cooperative in 1990. In 1993, he presented an exhibition in the UK together with Makonde sculptors such as Salum Chuma and Njawike. His paintings have also been used in a number of publications.

He now lives in Msasani with his wife and children. Three of his children are also painters: Salum Zaburi, Zachi Chimwanda and Rajabu Chimwanda (called Roger).

Daudi Tingatinga

Daudi Tingatinga is the only son of the most well known Tanzanian painter Edward Saidi Tingatinga.

Unfortunately Daudi has lived most of his life in poverty and his mother Agatha didn't have enough money for food or education. However, Daudi was guided by Mzee Lumumba, who taught him how to paint so he could carry on his fathers' legacy.

Jaffari Mimus

Jaffari Mimus was born in 1962 in Nakapanya village and is from the Makua tribe from southern Tanzania.

He started to paint in 1983, learning from Mr. Hashim Bushir. He enjoys painting a variety of different animals, and recently displayed an exhibition in the National Museum of Tanzania.

He now lives in Msasani, Dar es Salaam with his family and he has one child.

Yasini Hasani

Yasini Hassani was born in 1978 in the Mtwara region of Tanzania as part of the Makua tribe.

He started to paint in 1992 as a student of Mr. Hasani Kamale. He has held an exhibition of his work in the National Museum of Tanzania, with his paintings primarily based on wildlife.

He lives in Dar es Salaam with his wife and two children.

Saidi Omary

Saidi Omary was born in 1979 in Msasani in Dar es Salaam. He is from the Makua tribe and his family originally comes from the Tunduru district. He now lives in Msasani Mikoroshini.

He started painting in 1990, taught by Mr. Said Chilamboni. His artwork (which focuses on animals) has been exhibited at the National Museum of Tanzania and the French embassy in Tanzania.

Jabili Masoud was born in 1972 in Dar es Salaam. He is from the Makua tribe, and was taught painting by Mr. Kambili in 1997.

Saidi Chilamboni

Mohamed Saidi Chilamboni was born in Mindu, Tanzania to his Makua mother and Makonde father.

After his schooling he became a tailor, however he eventually decided to follow his passion and started painting full time.

In 1973 he moved to Dar es Salaam where he met established artists Amonde and Tedo, and learned to paint in the Tingatinga style which he continues to this day.
