Banana fibre batiks are collages of banana fibre which depict typical Kenyan scenes.

The creative process

To create a banana fibre batik, green banana leaves are harvested in Kiambu, just north of Nairobi. They are cleaned with water and dried in the sun until they turn brown/black.

The delicate brown/black leaves are then cut into strips and stuck onto either bark or cloth with glue. They are then varnished for preservation.

Our banana fibre batiks are sold unframed so you may choose a frame to suit your home.
