Candle Wax Batiks

An original piece of African art for your home.

The creating of a candle wax batik

A batik is a hand-painted or dyed cotton fabric. The artist begins by carefully drawing the outline of the picture he or she wishes to create onto the fabric. Dye is added one colour at a time. Candle wax is used to cover parts of the picture to be left untouched at each stage of the dyeing process. The wax protects the fabric from paint and dye so the artist can be particular in his or her colour choices.

The wax is left to dry before the cloth is dipped in dye. Sometimes the dye is painted onto the fabric.

Dyed fabrics are sun-dried before the wax is removed from the next section to be painted.

This process is repeated until the entire cloth has been coloured. Once the cloth is completely dry and all wax has been removed, the artist adds fine detail to complete the design.
