We’re having a leaving sale!!

A change in circumstances means we will be moving permanently to New Zealand and taking African Art Direct with us.

The website will no longer end with “.com.au”, but will become “www.africanartdirect.co.nz” prices will also be in New Zealand dollars and shipping will only be free within NZ.

Due to this big change we are having a 20% OFF SALE on all our paintings and batiks to give you a last chance to buy your favourite piece before we leave the country!

We still have a great range of beautiful Tingatinga art available, stunning paintings from Kenya and Tanzania, vibrant Candle Wax Batiks and elegant Heidi Lange prints.

New Artwork Available Now!

We have just returned from a buying trip in East Africa so the website has some stunning new artwork on display now available for purchase. Don’t forget all prices include GST and shipping is free to anywhere in Australia!

On the buying trip we visited Kenya and Tanzania; both countries are rich in beautiful vibrant artwork and so many talented artists.

First we went to Dar es Salaam, the main city in Tanzania where we purchased a stunning new collection of the vibrantly coloured and very popular Tingatinga paintings.

The Co-operative brings together highly skilled Tingatinga artists who spend their days at the co-operative painting their famous brightly coloured paintings.

Next we went to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya to meet with the artists we buy from there. We brought some stunning high quality paintings from well renowned artists Kamunya Wanjuki, Bernard Ndichu and Ken Kamau. We also stocked up on more of the ever popular candle wax batiks. These batiks have been very popular and will brighten up any room with their vibrant colours. We are the only people in Australia that sell these types of batiks.

On this trip we also purchased our first oil on canvas paintings which depict typical African scenes and once framed look stunning so keep an eye out for these in the ‘Paintings’ section of the website.

GVN Foundation Fundraiser

GVN Foundation is a charity doing incredible work in Kenya; expanding a local school, supporting orphanages and assisting with the basic needs of food, shelter and medical care in an Internally Displaced Persons camp (IDP).

In a partnership with people from the IDP camp, they have built a school providing free education to the local community in the Aberdare Ranges. The school opened in May this year, and the GVN Foundation is continuing to fundraise to expand the school in order to provide an exceptional and international standard of education to the children in the local community.

The GVN Foundation has some great ways to raise money for the work they are doing in Kenya, such as their ‘Eat so they can’ dinner parties which are a great way to raise money for the charity. Also their annual fundraiser which was held on 16^th September.

We donated one of our stunning Khehla paintings to the charity auction, the painting was auctioned off for over $200!

Mwamba House Charity Night

Recently Mwamba House held a fundraising trivia evening to raise money for their projects in Mwanza, Tanzania; including running support groups for HIV+ mothers, reading groups for local children, and providing school equipment for orphans among many other very important projects.

We decided to donate a painting to the charity auction to help raise money for Mwamba House and thought donating a Tingatinga painting would be most appropriate since this popular style of painting originated in Tanzania.

The evening was a great success with plenty of funds raised for the charity and we are really happy that the Tingatinga painting, ‘In the Jungle’ painted by Iddi Issa, sold for $200. This full amount will go straight into Mwamba House’s projects in Tanzania.

Vanessa Grant Trust

We recently donated a Heidi Lange print called ‘Head of Young Maasai Girl' to the Vanessa Grant Trust charity for a fundraising evening. The evening was a huge success with our Heidi Lange print selling at auction for $500!

The Vanessa Grant Trust supports numerous educational projects in Kenya including the recent opening of a girls college which is quite rare in Kenya where opportunities for education tend to favour boys first.

The Trust developed a school for mentally handicapped children and has also set up a primary school, a girls college and a vocational training centre for children who have finished primary school.

The Trust can only achieve these amazing outcomes through donations. To help continue their work, please visit the Vanessa Grant Trust website.

Exhibition Update

The exhibition finished up on Wednesday this week and was a great success!

We had a lot of interested people viewing the stunning artwork on display and some very happy customers who walked away with a unique, one of a kind piece of African Art.

We also managed to raise enough money for a good sized donation to Mwamba House.

Spend an enchanting hour exploring our unique collection of African art while relaxing to the sweet sounds and rhythms of African music. Experience the emotion of our original Shona stone sculptures. Lose yourself in the detail of our Tingatinga paintings and African batiks. And fall in love with our unique collection of African paintings by world-renowned artists Heidi Lange and Khehla.

4 Walls Space Gallery

We've chosen the 4 Walls Space Gallery to highlight the unique beauty of our Shona stone sculpture. The large, airy space fills with natural light, so that you enjoy the exquisite colours of the stone coming to life.

And of course, Alyssa will be on hand to answer all your questions about her two greatest passions, Africa and African art.

Supporting Tanzanian charity

A percentage of each sale will be donated directly to Mwamba House, a small, locally run charity in rural Tanzania. Mwamba House provides classes, services and assistance to the disadvantaged and vulnerable children and adults of Mwanza. They support the health, education and living conditions of local orphans, people with HIV, and others disadvantaged by circumstance.
